The Global University Leaders Council Hamburg 2021 will address the role of universities and their leaders in facing the grand challenges of climate change and sustainability.
Through teaching, research, and transferring and exchanging knowledge, universities have the potential to contribute significantly to both climate protection and a sustainable future. Around the world, many universities are already addressing these challenges head on. Yet, the dangers of rising planetary temperatures and the urgent need to foster sustainable development place new and ever-increasing demands on universities and their leaders. However, competing priorities, lacking institutional visions, and structural and financial constraints can undermine efforts to address these issues more effectively.
The GUC Hamburg 2021 will examine how universities are responding to climate change and sustainability in a number of key areas. Based on joint analyses and the shared insights of experienced academic leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds, the GUC will formulate valuable recommendations for the future engagement of universities in sustainability initiatives and climate action.
